OPEN READINGS 2012 conference feedback

You were participating in the "Open Readings" conference as:

Where are you from?

How many times you have participated in "Open Readings" before?

What was your participation motivation? (select not more than 3 answers)

How would you evaluate conference activities? (1 - very bad; 5 - very good)

Do you think that students' contributions should be refereed more strictly?

If you were a presenter, did the number of attending lecturers/scientists satisfy you?

How would you evaluate the organization of the conference? (1 - very bad; 5 - very good)

Please indicate the most significant shortcomings of conference organization

  1. The time of the poster sessions was too late, the lecture "What do we know about the universe?" was a bit boring
  2. Lack of information before the conference: where and when to be etc.
  3. leaflet about activity after conference: there was written only the place where the party is, but not even when and what ( bowling or smth). in the invitation e-mail you sent that participans has to write thesis ( A dissertation or thesis[1] is a document submitted in support of candidature for an academic degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research and findings.[2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thesis). ispite of thesis there should be abstract, because you printing abstract book. no e-mails sent about the programme and time of presentation.
  4. 1)As a visitor to Vilnius , found it difficult to get used to transportation system, in the homepage, there should be info about buying tickets to busses and trolleys, while traveling through city. 2)Internet in dormatory.
  5. Lack of information before the conference which resulted low amount of people. Second lecture in Planetarium.
  6. At the time of my presentation there were other presenters with I wanted to ask but couldn't because I was presenting at the same time.
  7. -
  8. Technical problems in oral sessions, lack of professors.
  9. Chairmen sometimes failed to ask any question, when noone else asked. The abstracts book contains several abstracts that seem to be never looked through by organizers (e.g. about the Higgs boson)
  10. 1) Well... we were not preprared we will be placed in dormitories that are as bad as in most dormitories Poland (but, acutally, we could have expected so). 2) There was a little mess with the internet in the dormitories. Even if we weren't going to use, it would be more confortable to know how to get it and what are the prices.

What would be your suggestions for the organizing committee for Open Readings 2012 ?

  1. I think, you should make the poster sessions earlier so that more students (who have lectures in the morning/afternoon) could see the posters
  2. more information before the event
  3. become more organized
  4. Nothing special... Good work for all of You!
  5. get a login for wifi in dormatories next year, even if it will be for fee, just make the process easier :)
  6. Use every possible way to spread the information. Consider only the lecturers you can truly trust on.
  7. -
  8. To introduce a little bit more reference for the contributions. Sure, one should keep in mind that students are not mature scientists :)
  10. 1) Make some short "welcome party" (or some similar activity) on the first day of the conference. It would allow foreigners to get to know some people earlier that on the conference party. Believe me, foreigners such as me will be really grateful for this. 2) Tell the foreigners first time visiting your conference what they can find in the dormitories and what not. (Things like: that there's a kitchen, a fridge, some old pots and pans, but there are no ketlle to boil water, plates, spoons, forks etc) 3) Give people information about the internet in the dormitories and some brief manual about the Eduroam in the faculty. I suppose each year people have problems with it... 4) It seems not many people in Poland know about your conference. Did you send an information about the conference to students asocciations (in Warsaw, Cracov, Wroclaw/Breslau, Gdansk, Poznan, Torun, Lublin, Katowice)? (If there's a problem with finding Polish students' physics asocciations because of no webpages in English, I can help you - Anna)

Are you going to participate in the next year's conference?

Would you consider writing a "Open Readings" conference proceedings paper to a journ- factor smaller than 0,24 if there was such possibility?

Was this questionnaire too long?
