star trek managed to incorporate, reflect, and question the prevailing social conventions of its time, as well as to present a "better" future. for example: the original series, filmed from 1966 to 1969. in the midst of the cold war, there is a russian officer on the spaceship! furthermore, a woman - and a black woman at that! (equality for women and african americans was still in its early stages back then) are on the bridge, and for the first time on tv, a white man kissed a black woman! star trek, like other series, questioned current events. discrimination and other issues of daily life were addressed and "discussed" there.
