Should people with mental disorders be sterilized?

  1. it can help them as a blessing in disguise because if they give birth to children, proper care cannot be provided.
  2. no
  3. no.
  4. i'm curious about the north carolina sterilization thing; did they actually force women to get them, or was it simply a matter of telling them they would get no public assistance if they didn't? although the latter is a form of coercion, i think it is nowhere near as bad as if they did just force it. however, the example they cite even shows how the grandmother consented. though, i will say that it seems like the board only considered sterilizing women, which is stupid and sexist.
  5. no, if they are aware of their responsibilities if they have a baby.

Who should decide whether an individual with mental disorder has a right to reproduce and raise children (more than one answer can be chosen)?

  1. no
  2. this is one of the most biased and prejudicial 'surveys' i have ever seen.
  3. satan.
  4. nobody has the right to decide that.

  6. it really depends on the mental disorder that one has. if a person is under treatment and can take care of his/her children in the long term, i don't see any reason why this person wouldn't have the right to reproduce. if he is seriously affected, of course medical opinions have to be taken into consideration and the court could also decide.
  7. working in childcare, i have seen a case where a woman married a man who had been on very heavy medication for anxiety and depression. while these are not disabilities, they had a profound effect on the child. the child is almost 3... he cannot speak, understand or play 'normally'. he constantly screams for no reason, whether happy or sad. this same mother has confided in me that she wishes she had an abortion. it also impacted her relationship so much that they are now divorced and never see each other. i believe we should all look at the bigger picture and realize what kind of life these children would lead if they were passed down mental disabilities.
  8. the person with the mental disorder if this is possible
  9. everyone has the right to reproduce and raise children, including mentally disabled persons. however, to me, parents know best what their children are capable of and whether they are able to raise kids.
