Farewell Opera?

you know what they say: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. opera wasn't broken, but they tried to fix it nonetheless. farewell, opera.

the reason opera has always been the most attractive option on the desktop is its rich feature set with many innovative features that didn't require add-on management. having a stable and fast rendering engine is, of course, very important, but without many/most of the opera 12 feature set, it no longer stands out from any other browser and becomes very interchangeable. i sincerely hope you can get the blink version of opera back to the opera that we all liked and used, because the first release unfortunately didn't.

i've already switched to chrome about 18 months ago, but opera has so far remained my second choice browser. if opera can add sufficient features to chrome, i would certainly consider switching back. (it would also help if my my.opera.com account hadn't been silenced for daring to speak up about bugs...) if i could name one single feature that makes opera essential for me, it is the single-key shortcuts (which were removed as the default many releases ago, but are still available by turning on "one-key shortcuts"). most specifically, the four most important keys in my conceptual model of browser operation are '1'/'2' to move left/right in the tab bar, and 'x'/'z' to move forward/back in a tab's history. i currently have these in chrome via the "keyboard-fu" extension, but this is inadequate for two reasons: it does not apply to chrome-internal pages, and it is processed far too late in the input chain. opera allows me to switch between tabs at any time, regardless of the state of reload, javascript hang, etc., that the individual tabs are in. please implement opera-style editable keyboard shortcuts, and ensure they are processed as early as possible in the input chain so they work at all times and in all circumstances. thanks! >bela<

speed dial, bookmark management, the ability to search without suggesting bookmarks, speed, and elegance are what i have always liked in opera.

this feels like losing a friend. opera was the app i spent most of my time in at work developing and at home, even on my phone. it did everything i needed out of the box and the features i did not use i could turn off or remove the button through customizations. i don't like any other browser but i can't follow you down this new path. goodbye. p.s. why can't you just switch the rendering engine and leave the rest alone?

content blocking, user css, tab grouping, and basically all the fine-tuning are what differentiate you. i tolerate the instability and poor js performance because of that. if i miss enough of these features, the balance will tilt in favor of the real deal: google chrome. by the way, i became an opera customer before it became free: i love it and i would still pay for the special experience...

here lies opera 1996-2014 bought by google, shot in the back and left to die.

i will stay on v12 until it works or for about a year. if the new opera doesn't have features that make opera 12 my browser of choice, i will switch to firefox and customize it like opera 12.

the specialists at opera hq think that o15 is much better without the "old" features of o12! the users think that o15 is too primitive without these features and want them back! but the users are not specialists!

i really loved opera. if i wanted chrome, i would install it.

opera was a great piece of software when i first discovered it (around version 5.x): nice pop-up handling, mdi, e-mail, icq, speed, etc. i remember well version 7, with m2, for which i was very enthusiastic (views, and no more folders!). keyboard shortcuts customization was also a killer feature... (i could make my own vi-like shortcuts...) it was a long road... goodbye, and good luck, opera!

please leave presto as an open-source project and add all features from presto opera to the new opera. i am a big fan of yours, but i miss everything from the old opera in the new opera.

opera is my primary browser on my linux machines in both work and home. on windows at work, i use chrome for google apps and a mixture of opera and firefox for everything else (i avoid internet explorer completely). i've actively encouraged the users on my network (cheshire-based secondary school with 1600 pupils, 200 staff) to use opera since 2001 and support it alongside internet explorer, firefox, and safari. if next15 is going to be our only option, then i will have no hesitation in removing it from my work's network because (1) i need the system configurability of the old opera, (2) our users won't appreciate a dumbed down and restricted version of chrome, which is all next looks like at the moment, and (3) it will be one less app for me to support. i will just revert to using firefox at home.

maybe this adaptation of yours to a world of apps instead of sophisticated software was inevitable for the survival of your company, but to me there is no use for such a piece of crippled presentation window for a few all-too-mighty internet portals. there are dozens out there who do the same job but there is no true replacement for the matured and experienced software that opera had developed over the years.

opera was the best browser around, and the engine switch could have made opera even better! but when the last couple of versions of opera 12 have been broken, i think after more than 10 years of opera love, it's time to switch...

i loved the customizability of opera without having to install numerous extensions (custom mouse gestures, tab thumbnails, custom search queries, etc.), but if my most important features go missing, i will initially keep opera 12.15 for a while and then switch to a different browser.

i remember when opera was ad-supported in that crazy frame at the top, but it was still the first browser to have tabbed browsing and mouse gestures (and made me beg for those features on every other browser i've ever used). i've stuck with opera because of the incredible depth of customization it provides. opera 15 doesn't provide that level of customization, which makes me feel like it's lost its essence as a browser. it's exactly this reason that chrome will never be my primary browser, and if opera next follows in chrome's footsteps, the same will (sadly) be true of opera. customizing tab behavior is an absolute requirement; bookmarks are a fundamental feature in a browser. i was truly hoping that moving opera to the blink engine would bring the perfect combination of a strong, widely-supported browser rendering core and the deep customizability i've always loved from opera. please don't let me down.

if i wanted to use chrome, i would have gotten it from google.com, not opera.com. other than the theme, there is nearly no difference between opera 15 and chrome.

i won't switch away from opera for the foreseeable future -- i'll just keep using the utterly wonderful opera 12 for now. i expect the reason for switching engines was to be able to devote more time to the ui. i understand that this means a few steps back at first, but ultimately faster development of the ui, and i think this is a fair choice to make. if the opera team manages to build an opera interface over the chromium engine, i think you will have created the best damn browser that ever surfed the internet. until that day, i will keep using opera 12 and wish you all the best. p.s: the five features i want most are: * spatial navigation * custom search keywords * notes * single-key shortcuts * per-site settings when you've got those implemented, i'll probably start using your new version. good luck!
