Spread of information and public's reaction to the Ukraine-Russia conflict on social media

Hello, my name is Augustinas. I'm a second-year student of New Media Language study program at the Kaunas University of Technology. I am conducting research on the spread of information on the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict on social media, what is the public's opinion on the conflict itself and the trustworthiness of the information people read or see on social media platforms.

The survey should take 2-4 minutes to complete. I encourage you to answer the questionnaire as honestly as possible, as the responses to the survey are 100% anonymous.

If there are any questions, insights or concerns regarding this survey, do not hesitate to contact me: [email protected]

Thank you very much for your participation.

How much do you trust the information on social media platforms on the ongoing conflict, on a scale from 1 to 10?

Why did you rate the last question that amount?

  1. because i never trust the media 100%.
  2. it is true what i see.
  3. because social media channels can post whatever they want. they can display the sources, but even those can sometimes be false or incorrect.
  4. it's always difficult to separate the truth from statements.
  5. because the sources i follow are legitimate, official news services in lithuania.
  6. because i don't really follow the conflict so closely, i don't fully trust it until i see multiple reports on the same situation.
  7. because the "western" media is also guilty of propaganda, whether you hate it or like it, nothing is 100% true.
  8. i chose a higher rate because the main source of information for me on this topic is certain people whom i trust as reliable sources. however, there are also many other sources that people do not follow, and they still appear in their feed, which i evaluate critically.
  9. there is some misinformation.
  10. i trust most of the news about the war, but sometimes i find myself believing in some russian propaganda because it was written on the news portal.

What opinions do you mostly see on social media regarding this conflict?

  1. that ukraine is the victim and they fight for their right to be independent. and russia is an aggressor.
  2. ukraine victory
  3. most of the people i see on social media are supporting the ukrainians. however, if you dig deeper, you can find a lot of russian propaganda, especially on a platform like twitter.
  4. mostly negative.
  5. either pro-russian or pro-ukrainian. maybe neutral-sided too.
  6. mostly that ukraine survives solely on nato support.
  7. a lot of controversial opinions, but a lot of true ones too.
  8. support for ukraine
  9. pro-ukrainian or anti-beast
  10. mostly - really bad thoughts about russia and the russian language.

What is your stance on this conflict?

Why did you pick that particular option in the question above?

  1. because i support ukraine's right to be an independent state
  2. i can think of how i can trust.
  3. ukrainians were attacked without any real motive that could objectively be considered viable. the russians are committing many war crimes against the innocent people of ukraine.
  4. aggression towards ukraine is aggression towards europe.
  5. because it is the right option.
  6. because after the war, ukraine is going to be in massive debt, and the russian people are manipulated by the few who are in control. neither russians nor ukrainians should be involved in it.
  7. because russia is still the aggressor, and killing innocent people, bombing schools, hospitals, and apartment buildings can never be justified.
  8. because it was a russian invasion of a free country, historical similarities to lithuania
  9. this invasion is not human.
  10. i don't have to comment; the facts speak for themselves.

Has the ongoing conflict influenced/changed your opinion on Ukraine and Russia? If yes, how? If not, why?

  1. no
  2. russia shows how strong she is, and now we can see how truly strong she is, and russia never tells the truth.
  3. ever since the events in 2013 in ukraine and the occupation of crimea, it was clear to me and many others that russia is extremely unstable and should not be trusted. the recent events just solidify that statement. as for ukraine, it only showed how powerful the country and its people are.
  4. it hasn't changed. my stance on the russian government has always been negative.
  5. ukraine is a very strong country with a great president as well. a true leader. when it comes to russia, it has only revealed its evil ambitions. i hope ukraine can push out the invaders one way or another and rebuild its infrastructure. it is a tragedy, and it is happening not far from lithuania. a war for no logical reason at all.
  6. not really, it just shows the massive corruption that russia has.
  7. yes, it did. of course, russia has never been our friend, but to me, that country at this point is below ground level. the way they just attacked their so-called "brothers," the ukrainians, seems inhuman. so i would say that my view of russia has changed in a really bad way, but ukraine has shown what a great brotherly land it is. the way they are standing up for themselves is something incredible. a lot of countries should learn from the ukrainians.
  8. i have always evaluated russian politics critically, but now not just politics, but the whole culture seems inhumane to me. my respect for ukraine and ukrainians has also grown a lot.
  9. no, i have always thought of russia as a corrupt country with little to no people, only brainwashed robots.
  10. yes, because i wanted to learn russian, now i want to learn ukrainian.
